"Boo at the Zoo" Event at The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, October 19-20, 26-27

The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark, turns wildly spooktacular the weekends of October 19-20 and 26-27, 2024 from 11am to 4:30pm for “Boo at the Zoo,” the annual Halloween-themed event that features animal shows, trick or treating, kids’ scavenger hunt, food trucks, free kids’ crafts and more.

For the family-fun event, the Zoo will be draped in decorations, and people of all ages can closely view the more than 100 animals cared for at the Zoo.

Admission is $12 for ages 12-16, $10 for ages 2-12 and $10 for seniors (65+). Kids ages 2 and under are admitted free. Tickets available at zoo.moorparkcollege.edu/boo-at-the-zoo.

The Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College is the only zoo in Ventura County and is the home of the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program, which started in 1971. The program offers preparation for those interested in entering the expanding animal care industry. The students study zoo keeping, basic medical care, wildlife education and training using positive reinforcement methods.

Five07 Turkey Day Dash 5K and Zack Zernik Mile in Thousand Oaks on Thursday, November 28, 2024

Five07 presents the 2024 Turkey Day Dash on Thanksgiving Thursday, November 28, 2024. Register for the 5K road race or the Zack Zernik Mile (run/walk) at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, 60 West Olsen Road.

Proceeds from the event will benefit local youth - Southeast Ventura County YMCA, Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks Foundation and Ventura County Council of Boy Scouts.

The Zack Zernik Mile is named for a Conejo Valley native and lifelong “Dasher” who lost his life in January 2023 at the age of 22. Zachary “Zack” Zernik, a graduate of Thousand Oaks High School, was climbing near Mount Boney outside Newbury Park when he lost his footing and fell. 

New this year: the Zack Zernik Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded to two high school students. Winners will be announced before the start of the mile. To apply, go to turkeydaydash.org/zack-zernik-scholarship.

Festivities start at 7 am, mile run/walk at 8 am and 5K at 8:30 am.

Bring the family to cheer on local bands, equestrian groups, floats, and Santa! The parade starts at Las Posas and Temple Ave. and ends at the Community Center. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Check out Santa's Village! 10am- 2pm at the Community Center, 1605 Burnley St. There will be shopping, food trucks, live music, photos with Santa, and other free activities.

The Camarillo Ranch Foundation will celebrate the City’s namesake’s birthday with a free birthday celebration that will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2024. The birthday celebration is a tradition that honors Don Adolfo’s love for community.

The free event is open to the public and will feature:

The Simi Valley Historical Society invites you to their 10th Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival on Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 11AM to 5PM at Strathearn Historical Park & Museum.

Event to include music, entertainment, craft vendors, crafts for kids, face painting, food and more. Costumes encouraged.

Día de los Muertos is traditionally a three day celebration running from October 31st to November 2nd.  This is an event that explores the beautiful symbols, traditions, and imagery of the holiday with activities that represent something significant and special in the remembrance of loved ones. Part of the celebration is the altars (ofrendas) in the Wood Ranch Barn. Individuals, families and businesses are encouraged to construct altars for the celebration to honor loved ones who have passed on.

38th Annual California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria, October 5-6, 2024

The 38th Annual California Avocado Festival takes place October 5 and 6, 2024. Festival hours 10am to 10pm Saturday and 10am to 6pm Sunday.

One of the largest free festivals in California with over 60 music acts on three stages.

The AvoEXPO TENT is home to Avocado agricultural photos, historical photos, lessons in avocado grafting, FFA restored antique tractors, and the Largest Avocado Contest.

The FOOD VENUE will have plenty of avocado dishes so come hungry, and enjoy some avocado creations!!!

There will also be merchant booths with local vendors, a ferris wheel, guacamole contest and much more.

2024 Seaside Highland Games at Ventura County Fairgrounds, October 12-13

The weekend of October 12-13, 2024 will see Scotland in all its color and pageantry come alive on the Fairgrounds as the Seaside Highland Games return to Ventura. The pipes—the Great Highland Bagpipes of Scotland—will signal the call to gather on that one special weekend when all are invited to join in the fun!

Hundreds of pipers and drummers along with all sorts of Scottish/Celtic entertainment will descend on the Ventura County Fairgrounds and the gates are open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm.

A wonderfully entertaining weekend of music, dance, athletics, children’s events, shopping, food and drink! Something for everyone! Seaside is known for bringing tradition to the field—with a twist! The ageless Celtic pastimes are honored but with a big nod to today. The pipes will play the tunes handed down through the ages—but don’t be surprised when you hear new and modern sounds emerging from those ancient reeds!

Massed pipe bands, large men throwing things, Scottish entertainers, clan tents, children's den, British food, Highland dancing, reenactments, darts, Scottish Fiddling Competition, all sorts of stuff!

Admission prices at the gate are $25 for ages 13 to 61 for 1 day; $40 for both days and $20/$35 for 62+ seniors and military. Ages 6 to 12 are $5. Five and under are free.
