Straight Up Ventura County Prescription for Change Video Contest 2013

"Prescription for Change" video contest for youth focuses on growing problem in County

"Prescription for Change" is the theme of Straight Up Ventura County's annual video contest, in response to the growing issues surrounding Rx drug abuse in Ventura County.

It's a trend observed by prevention agencies such as Straight Up: nonmedical use of prescription drugs has increased among County young people in the past year -- or have remained at unacceptably high levels.

For example, the percent of County 12th graders reporting nonmedical use of the stimulant Adderall has increased from 5.4% in 2009 to 7.6% in 2012. Use of the opoid Vicodin among 12th graders, while not increased, remains at a surprising 7.5%.

"Many people are still unaware that prescription drug abuse has become a big problem in our community," says Katherine Kasmir, Program Director of Straight Up. "Through this video contest we have the chance to hear what young people have to say about the problems and their suggestions for change. We have to be informed and take action to solve these problems as a community."

The contest is open to Ventura County residents between 12-25 years of age. Entrants are asked to create their videos around topics such as the dangers of mixing prescription drugs with alcohol or safe storage and disposal of prescription drugs.

Short videos (30-90 seconds) are preferred, but longer videos are welcome as well. A grand prize of $500 will be awarded. The deadline is April 19, 2013 and winners notified by May 3.

Downloadable rules and guidelines can be found at www.straightupvc.org/contest. Information sessions, training and equipment lending can be made available.

Straight Up Ventura County (a project of Ventura County Behavioral Health Department Alcohol and Drug Programs) works closely with young people to raise awareness and create change around the issues of alcohol and drug abuse. Advocacy training, reality improv workshops and video projects are some of the way youth can get engaged and become empowered.
