Subway in the North Ranch Gateway in Westlake Village Closed Its Doors on October 29th

SubwayWLV1.jpg

Joining a growing list of local area Subway closures is the Subway in the North Ranch Gateway (aka TJ Maxx Plaza) at 30817 Thousand Oaks Boulevard, Westlake Village. This is disappointing to me personally as I’ve been to this Subway a number of times and always enjoyed it.

Folks may joke about how many Subway Sandwich eateries there are, but there really has been a noticeable drop, with Subway closures in Newbury Park (two of them) in 2016, at Janss Marketplace Thousand Oaks a few months ago, Subway in the Simi Valley Civic Center Plaza last month and the Conejo Valley Plaza Shopping Center in June 2016.

Bubbers Bowls in Westlake Village is Closed

Theresa C sent over this picture via the Conejo Valley Guide Facebook Page indicating Bubbers Bowls, a place that served up acai bowls, juices and smoothies at The Shoppes at Westlake Village, is closed. I can confirm that the website is down and no one answers the phone.

Five years ago, in October 2004, Bowl of Heaven opened here and a couple years later changed their name to Bubbers Bowls. If you're looking for another acai bowl option in that vicinity, I will say that for $5, the acai bowls at the Costco food court is not bad! My youngest enjoys the acai bowls at Ubatuba in Thousand Oaks.

Subway at Janss Marketplace Has Closed Its Doors

Kira K pointed out that the Subway at Janss Marketplace is now closed. A sign points out there's another Subway just 300 meters (or approximately 984 foot longs) in the Village Court strip mall at 440 North Moorpark Road, northeast corner of Moorpark Road and Brazil Street in Thousand Oaks.

Well this is a bummer for me personally as we did patronize this particularly Subway more than most.

Greens Up! at The Shoppes at Westlake Village to Close Its Doors on Thursday, August 1st

GreensUpClosing2019.jpg

Greens Up! at The Shoppes at Westlake Village will be closing its doors permanently, effective August 1st. They opened this location just under 5 years ago, on October 22, 2014. On a personal note, I am sorry to see them close, though am not surprised given they recently stopped service on weekends.

Thanks to Kelly H for the heads up via the Conejo Valley Guide Facebook Page for letting us know.

Other Greens Up! locations are in Santa Monica. www.greensupsalads.com/locations.

Outback Steakhouse Thousand Oaks Appears to be Closing Its Doors This Month (June 24th)

Outback Thousand Oaks.jpg

According to no less than half a dozen sources, Outback Steakhouse Thousand Oaks, at its iconic location at 137 E. Thousand Oaks Boulevard, will be closing its doors later this month. The sources are correct.. After 23 years serving the Conejo Valley, Outback Steakhouse will be closing its doors on Monday, June 24th.

A CVG Instagram follower first noted the situation. I thought, no way, how do you know? Then I drove by Outbook and saw the “For Lease” sign up in front of the building.

But hey, the lease could be for another unit in the two story, 13,449 square foot building built in 1978. But the space that is currently up for lease is a 6,500 square foot, 1st floor restaurant space. That ain’t the Century 21 office (though that said, Century 21 Commercial is the listing agent).

So then I think, well maybe the landlord is listing it as a backup plan if the lease is in negotiation. That could be the case, though unlikely.

Several employees confirmed via phone and in person that indeed, they have been told that they would be closing later this month. The 24th has been the most repeated date by concerned folks on the CVG Facebook page.

Folks always ask, why are they closing? There’s all sorts of reasons businesses close and generally they are not made public - rent increases, now landlords, retiring owners or simply not making adequate profit - are all possible reasons.

If this location does close its doors, that would leave just the Oxnard location at 2341 Lockwood Street open in Ventura County. www.outback.com

Baja Fresh Thousand Oaks to Close Its Doors at the End of May (May 30th)

BajaFresh5.8.19TO.jpg

Several folks reached out to let us know that Baja Fresh #50, opened in January 1999 at 595 North Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks will be closing at the end of this month.

UPDATE: Thursday, May 30th is the final day this Baja Fresh will be open.

There were no apparent signs of this happening at Baja Fresh - no signs, no social media mentions - but I was hungry tonight and decided to stop by for a burrito. Burrito Mexicano and chips in hand, it was then that I confirmed with staff that Baja Fresh #50 would indeed be closing by the end of this month.

It is a sad moment for me as, having lived and raising kids in the Conejo Valley for decades, Baja Fresh has been a mainstay, albeit less so in recent years,

The very first Baja Fresh opened in the Kimber Plaza in Newbury Park in 1990. It subsequently relocated to The Village at Newbury Park (near Home Depot), where after a number of years, closed its doors on January 10, 2012.

From what I gathered from staff, Cafe Rio Mexican Grill is looking to open in this spot. While I have not independently confirmed this, I do know that Cafe Rio is currently hiring restaurant managers for its new Thousand Oaks location. www.caferio.com
