No Mann's Land - The Final Remaining Mann Theatre in Westlake Village to Close on Tuesday, December 27th

Movies.jpg

The Mann Theatre at The Promenade at Westlake closed on December 27, 2011, as mentioned in this Dec 22 San Fernando Valley Business Journal article.

This was the last of the Mann theaters. Recently the Mann Theaters at the Janss Marketplace were sold to Regency Theaters and earlier this year the Mann Chinese Theater was sold and now is simply called Chinese Theatre.

The space will be taken over by Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, which will open a high-end theater with plush seating and waiters. Nice! Sounds like a Muvico competitor! This VIP concept has been in place since 1999 in Mexico and they are quickly expanding into Southern California.

Cinépolis is the 4th largest movie theater chain in the world, which is news to me. Probably because most of their 230 theaters worldwide are in Mexico.

The Hooters Drama Continues in Thousand Oaks as a Councilwoman Gets Involved

On Tuesday, the VC Star reported that Thousand Oaks Councilwoman Claudia Bill-de la Peña wrote a letter dated November 15th to property managers of Janss Marketplace, asking them to reconsider leasing space for a Hooters restaurant located in the parking lot adjacent to the mall.

This has been quite a drama for Thousand Oaks in 2011 since it was announced back in March that there was a possibility of Hooters occuping the space left vacant by Fuddruckers over a year and a half ago. Ultimately it was determined that there are no legal issues with a Hooters and they were moving forward.

Councilwoman Bill-de la Peña wrote her letter based on "'The opposition to an eatery is unprecedented, it is historical," she said. "In light of the opposition, I felt I needed to make the Janss mall aware of that, as if they weren't already. I felt with the outrage of the community ... I had to speak on behalf of those opposed.'"

We did our own survey here on CVG and the final outcome was roughly 30% of respondents were against opening a Hooters, 55% were thumbs up and the remainder pretty much had no opinion.

There are over 460 Hooters restaurants arouund the world. Hooters has operated since 1983. I ate at the Long Beach Hooters with my kids and frankly it wasn't a lot different than taking them to the local Cronies (love their beer), Draughts (also great beer), Tipsy Goat (beer me again) or Ladyface Ale (yep, great beer there too). They were not truamatized by the experience, nor did they ask about or expand upon the definition of the word Hooters (had they asked, the hooting sounds of owls would have of course been the response).

This shopping center has been part of the community for over 50 years. Janss Mall (as it was originally called) was built in 1960 with about 200,000 sq ft of space. In 1969 the 198,000 sq ft Sears was added, along with another 90,000 sq ft of shop space. Then in 1994 another 160,000 sq ft was added and it was renamed Janss Marketplace.

Janss Marketplace recently donated $15,000 to the Conejo Recreation & Park District youth programs. The funds were raised from the Reign of Terror Haunted House at the mall.

Let me digress. Yes there was a lot of opposition to the Hooters. But those not opposed were not asked to submit a response. Most people I know aren't in the habit of sending letters to City Hall to tell them about a new business they "approve" of, particularly when there are no laws preventing the business from opening. Most of us approve/disapprove of local businesses with our wallets, and that usually works fine.

Let the Hooters open. If you don't like it, simply don't eat there, tell your friends and neighbors not to eat there, etc. Capitalism is pretty efficient in that way. It worked for Fuddruckers quite well.

New Sprouts Farmers Market to Open in Westlake Village in May

Here is what the beautiful new Sprouts in Westlake Village now looks like. Located at 1012 S. Westlake Boulevard (at Agoura Road). Phone 805.917.4200.

Originally posted in March 2011: Sprouts Farmers Market cannot tell me the exact date yet, but tells me that the new Westlake Village store is slated to open sometime in mid-May 2011. That's not too far away. That would be the 2nd mid-May opening in a row for Sprouts, which opened its first Conejo Valley (or Ventura County, for that matter) Sprouts in the old Circuit City building at Hillcrest and Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks on May 12, 2010.

This new Sprouts as you can see below is work in process and I'm sure it'll be looking might nice for opening day. This is great news for the other businesses surrounding Sprouts, which should benefit from the added traffic.

Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop in Thousand Oaks

UPDATE: Rocket Fizz Thousand Oaks closed its doors on October 23, 2019 after a nearly 8 year run.

Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop opened a new location in Thousand Oaks (593 North Moorpark Road, adjacent to Peet's Coffee and Bandits BBQ, in what most recently was an AT&T Wireless store) on December 3rd. This store is independently owned and operated. Say hello to Anthony, the owner. Their phone is 805.494.7632.

We stopped in tonight, me and my 5 year old. This has to be THE best place to work, surrounded by all this candy and soda pop, bright colors and smiling customers. It is impossible not to smile in this place as there is so much to smile for. Not just the hundreds of sugar-laden delicacies you for the most part won't find at your local Vons. But for the hundreds of retro tin posters lining the walls. A sight to behold.

Rocket Fizz is growing like gangbusters! The original Rocket Fizz is in Old Town Camarillo on Ventura Blvd at Lewis Road. Other local locations include Westlake Boulevard (Thousand Oaks Blvd east of Lindero Canyon), Ventura (Oak Street at Santa Clara) and Simi Valley (Erringer near Cochran). Visit www.rocketfizz.com for more information. I'm off to eat my watermelon flavored licorice and chocolate Smarties now.

New Fresh & Easy Stores Coming Soon in Camarillo and Ventura

I don't have the specific dates, but two new Fresh & Easy stores are coming soon at 2249 Las Posas Road (at Arneill) in Camarillo and 2260 E. Thompson (at Seaward) in Ventura. And there ya have it. Visit www.freshandeasy.com for more information. Personally I'm a Fresh & Easy fan as I can usually count on getting in and out of the store extremely quickly with the self serve approach. I enjoy buying snacks, bakery items and pre-packaged meals at F&E but also buy other things. Prices seem pretty reasonable. Don't get my wrong, I still stop by Trader Joes and other markets but there is something uniquely different about F&E that brings me back.
