Beginning in Tax Year 2020, Eligible U.S. Taxpayers May Deduct up to $300 in Charitable Contributions from Gross Income

The CARES Act of 2020 brought about a change in how the IRS defines “Adjusted Gross Income” (AGI) on your tax returns.

Starting in 2020, “the amount (not to exceed $300) of qualified charitable contributions made by an eligible individual during the taxable year” are deducted, among other things, from gross income, in determining AGI.

The above language came out of the Internal Revenue Code. Let’s attempt to decipher this into language actual humans can understand.

The Short Answer

II you do not itemize deductions, starting in 2020, you can take as much as $300 in charitable contributions you make during the year. This reduces your taxable income and you may owe less taxes as a result.

How much less in taxes depend on your tax bracket, which can vary from 0 to 37% on your federal tax return. If you are already paying no federal taxes, this won’t change your tax bill. But otherwise, if you’re in, say, the 22% bracket and you gave $300 to charity, your tax bill will be lower by about $66.

What about state taxes? It’s not clear yet if California state law will conform to this law. If it does, that could save you a few more $$ on your state tax return.

Cash Contributions Only

Only charitable contributions made in cash (or credit card) are considered for this deduction. Non-cash deductions, such as giving used household items to Goodwill, are not included.

As a reminder, cash contributions to charities less than $250 require one of the following forms of documentation by the IRS: A bank record (e.g. canceled check or bank/credit card statement); a receipt showing the date, amount and name of the charity; or a payroll record, if it was withheld from your paycheck. Cash contributions over $250 also require a written acknowledgement from the charity showing date and amount and if any goods or services (other than religious benefits) were provided. You don’t need to attach this information to your return or anything; just keep it in your files.

$300 Per Return

So how does the $300 work for married couples? Is it $300 each? Nope. The $300 applies to all taxpayers. Yet another example of the “marriage penalty.” The $300 is per return.

What if you file married filing separate? There has been no clarification on this yet. We shall see.

Can I Take the Deduction If We Itemize Deductions?

No. If you itemize deductions, take the deduction there. If you are reading this, chances are that you did not itemize deductions in 2019. Before the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA), about 30% of taxpayers itemized deductions. After TCJA, it is estimated that only 10% of taxpayers itemize.

Fire Velo Cyclists Riding through Malibu This Morning on Fire Service Cancer Awareness Bicycle Ride

I was in the right place at the right time to catch this group of Fire Velo riders on the final 50 mile stage of their 7-day, 500+ mile 2019 Fire Service Cancer Awareness Bicycle Ride from San Francisco to the Santa Monica Pier. This footage on southbound PCH was taken at 9:30am just north of Zuma Beach. They were escorted once again by Malibu Fire Station #99, the westernmost fire station in Los Angeles County.

Fire Velo is a fire service based cycling club with a focus on cancer awareness within the fire service and raises funds for various firefighter cancer support organizations. More info at www.firevelo.com.

Application to Request Funds From Conejo Valley Victims Fund Now Open, through February 18, 2019

Following the tragedy that occurred at Borderline Bar & Grill on November 7, 2018, Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF), in coordination with other local organizations established the CONEJO VALLEY VICTIMS FUND.  After immediately distributing $310,000 in cash assistance and $500 prepaid gift cards related to the Borderline shooting, VCCF is now inviting individuals affected by the tragedy to submit applications for funding.

100% of the funds that have been raised will be used to assist the families of those who lost loved ones, the victims who were physically injured and those present inside the Borderline Bar & Grill the night of November 7, 2018. The payments from the Conejo Valley Victims Fund are to be apportioned in accordance with the severity of the injury to the victims arising from the event. 

VCCF has partnered with Give An Hour, which will lead efforts to provide mental health, emotional and case support to victims during the application process. In addition to opening up their Provider Network for mental health support, Give an Hour providers and staff are available to help those needing assistance with the Victim’s Fund Application. Three Victim Assistance Clinics will provide assistance to those who need help with the application. Licensed mental health clinicians will be on site at the Victim Assistance Clinics to offer support.

Additionally, VCCF will host two public forums to give concerned community members and those impacted by the Borderline shooting an opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions about this Draft Final Protocol which will determine the process and distribution protocols for awarding financial support to qualified applicants. The Final Distribution Protocol will be developed by the Special Oversight Committee, incorporating feedback from the Public Forum meetings held on January 3, 2019, and is subject to approval by the Ventura County Community Foundation.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Ventura County Serves Local Foster Kids

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Ventura County is a non profit, volunteer driven organization that recruits, trains and supports volunteers from the community to become sworn-in officers of the court who provide a consistent, caring adult in a foster child's life. Children helped by CASAs include those for whom home placement is being determined in juvenile court.  Most of the children are victims of abuse and neglect.

CASA organizations have been around for over 30 years in just about every every county and state across the nation with over 70,000 volunteers serving court dependent children. CASA has been serving children in Ventura County since 1985.  We currently have a team of 130 volunteers and serve over 200 court dependent foster children.

Each hour of our CASA program staff time generates 22 volunteer hours of direct support to a child.   The CASA formula is simple: additional funding means the capacity to recruit, train and support more volunteers to be matched with a foster child.

We have 80 children on a waiting list for a CASA right now.  For those 80 kids the CASA advocate may be the one, consistent, concerned adult by their side during a tumultuous phase of  their life.

Where to Find Ventura County Emergency Updates on Thomas Fire in Ventura County

The Thomas Fire was first reported on Monday night around 6:30 p.m. in Santa Paula, in the vicinity of Steckel Park and Thomas Aquinas College near the 150 (Ojai Road). Due to gale force Santa Ana winds, the fire spread quickly overnight to over 55,000 acres in less than 24 hours in Santa Paula, Ojai and Ventura.

As of Tuesday night, December 5, the "Thomas Fire" has burned over 150 structures, including the Hawaiian Village Apartments in Ventura

Governor Brown declared a state of emergency in Ventura County today as a result of the fire. (He also issued an emergency proclamation today for the Creek and Rye fires in Los Angeles County.) 

Text the United Way of Ventura County at UWVC to 41444 to donate to Thomas Fire victims; 100% of the donations will go directly to those affected by the fires.

Schools have been closed Tuesday in Ventura County and on Wednesday the following schools are slated for closure due to the wildfires:

  • CSU Channel Islands
  • Nearly all K-12 schools in Ventura County, including Conejo Valley USD, Fillmore USD, Moorpark USD, Ojai USD, Pleasant Valley SD, Santa Paula USD, Ventura USD, Simi Valley USD, Oxnard Elementary and Union High School Districts and other schools listed at www.vcoe.org.
  • UPDATE: The following districts will be closed the rest of the week (12/7-12/8): Briggs Elementary School District, Hueneme Elementary School District, Mesa Union Elementary SD, Mupu Elementary SD, Ocean View Elementary SD, Ojai USD, Oxnard Elementary SD, Oxnard Union HS District, Pleasant Valley SD, Rio Elementary SD, Santa Clara Elementary SD, Ventura USD.
  • UPDATE: As of 2:30PM 12/6, school is planned for Simi Valley and Conejo Valley Unified School Districts.
