Harbor Cove Beach at Ventura Harbor

Harbor Cove Beach (also referred to as "Mother's Beach") is located at the west end of Spinnaker Drive near Ventura Harbor Village and across from the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center. It is a "still water" beach protected by jetties that is considered one of the safest family friendly beaches in the area.

Waterfront activities include kayaking, kite flying and watching the boats come in and out of the harbor Restrooms and showers are available. Free parking! 

Across the street is the Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center at Channel Islands National Park.

Curious Five Year Old Asks Serious Questions About Santa Claus

We've seen Santa in six different locations so far this holiday season and will probably see him another six times before we approach 2011. Here is a conversation I had about Santa with my five year old tonight.

My 5 year old: How come there are so many Santa Clauses?

Me: He drives all over town to meet all the kids before Xmas.

Him: Does Santa Claus have a lot of brothers?

Me: I don't think so. He has a lot of elf helpers though at the North Pole.

Him: I think Santa has brothers that help him. (pause) How does he get to everyone's house in the whole wide world?

Me: His reindeer are really, really fast.

Him: How come we can't seem him?

Me: Because they are REALLY fast and you are asleep when he comes.

First Rainstorm of Fall 2015 Brings Rainbows to Ventura County

Kevin Herold of Oak Park captured this promising looking full rainbow in Oak Park yesterday, the 2nd and final day of clouds and light rains here in the Conejo Valley, Ventura County area. Although this fickle weather we're seeing is forecast to jump towards triple digit heat yet again towards the weekend, we were happy to see the rain and rainbows and hopeful for much more to come.

Sacla Italia, an Italian pesto and pasta sauce brand, served up a great surprise at a Buckinghamshire, England elementary school were served up lunch and an operetic surprise when four opera singers broke into a selection of works from Verdi, Puccini and Rossini. Fun to see the reactions on the kids' faces! 

Viewing the Supermoon Total Lunar Eclipse on Sunday, September 27th in California

A total lunar eclipse will take place on September 27th,  the second lunar eclipse of 2015, But this one is different, because it will rear its head at approximately 6:40pm. And the total eclipse, according to this Los Angeles Times article, starts at 7:11 p.m. and ends at 8:23 p.m. This total eclipse is quite family friendly!

The moon will appear to be larger than normal as it will be just 59 minutes past its closest approach to Earth in 2015 at mid-eclipse, sometimes called a supermoon.  Continue watching the moon come out of the shadow of the Earth until 10 p.m.

The National Park Service is on board, as it hosts a group led by Focus Astronomy at Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa in Newbury Park from 5-10PM. Telescopes will be available for viewing and photographing the full eclipse until 10pm. Once the sun sets, the telescopes will be focused on the moon as it rises over the hills.

Having lived in the Conejo (aka Rabbit) Valley for over 20 years, something that never dawned on me is that we don't have a bunny museum in town. But only an hour away in Pasadena is the largest collection of bunnies in the world, The Bunny Museum.

The Bunny Museum is located on a residential street in Pasadena. No big signs on anything, but the large bunny bush is a bit of a giveaway.The Bunny Museum is located at the home of Candace Frazee and Steve Lubanski at 1933 Jefferson Drive, Pasadena. They ask that you call to make an appointment at 626.798.8848 before stopping by. Admission is $5 and children under 4 are free.

We came with a gift, a Conejo Valley Guide keytag bunny, which was promptly added to the collection of, currently (and still growing), 30,510 bunnies of all sorts...stuffed animals, porcelain figurines, glassware, signs, toys and other collectibles.
